Public Health Dentistry is a specialized branch of dentistry that aims at preventing and controlling dental diseases and promoting dental health and is that form of dental practice which serves the community as a patient rather than the individual. The department was started in the year 2003. The post graduate course was introduced in the year 2011 with 3 PG students, which was increased to 5 postgraduate students in the year 2016.
Department is very well equipped with 28 dental chairs for carrying out all comprehensive dental care for OPD patients. Department also has its own seminar room for students to improve their knowledge and skills in an interactive manner. Department library with good number of latest resourceful books and online access portal for journal (Ebscohost) are made accessible for students. The department has a full – fledged dental health education museum, where OPD patients are educated on routine basis. A well –established Tobacco cessation unit run by the Department aims at motivating current tobacco smokers/chewers to quit the habit.
The department strength is our staff members who are expertise at training UGs and PGs and have many publications in both National and International Journals. They underwent specialized training in Cone Beam Computed Tomography, TMDs management and Oral Cancer Diagnosis. Every year various CDE programmes and workshops are being conducted for benefit of students.In any given day the department handles around 600 outpatients.
The department is well equipped with a mobile dental van with two dental chairs to render door step service. Department frequently conducts outreach programs and oral health education programs in various schools, institutions, orphanages, schools for special children and various public and private sectors in rural and urban areas, where diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases is carried out and the students are trained to deliver oral health care, diagnosis and prevention of oral diseases.
Also, the Department has three satellite centres which caters to the oral health needs of the rural population and has adopted two schools to provide free basic dental treatment. The department also runs a comprehensive dental clinic within the college premises for providing a coordinated delivery of the total dental care required or requested by the patient. As a part of NSS, we also conducted social welfare programs like anti tobacco rally, blood donation, organ donation, Haritha Haram (tree plantation). Apart from this we also organize General Health awareness programs like Swatch Barath.
