ORAL MEDICINE AND RADIOLOGY

 Department Overview

Oral Medicine and Radiology is a speciality that deals with diagnosis and management of complex medical conditions effecting the oral and maxillofacial region. We are expertise in medical management of diseases and disorders effecting the maxillofacial region. It involves multidisciplinary care and forms a bridge between Dentistry and Medicine.

It is a discipline devoted to teaching, research ,service and patient care. Diagnostic Radiology is an integral part of the speciality that deals with radiographic imaging ,interpretation and diagnosing the diseases of head and neck region. The department is equipped with both conventional and digital radiographic machines like IOPA machine, RVG and digital OPG.

The department strength is our staff members who are expertise at training UGs and PGs and have many publications in both National and International Journals. They underwent specialized training in Cone Beam Computed Tomography, TMDs management and Oral Cancer Diagnosis. Every year various CDE programmes and workshops are being conducted for benefit of students.In any given day the department handles around 600 outpatients.

THIRD YEAR BDS CURRICULUM

3rd year BDS students have postings in the department Oral medicine and radiology

Clinical posting -1 month (more than 150 hours)

Theory classes– 35 hours

SKILL DEVELOPMENT

  • Students are familiarized with the armamentarium to examine the patient and radiology department and equipments.
  • Trained in detailed Case history recording which includes Chief complaint and details of history related to the problem the patient is suffering from, to arrive at diagnosis, so that appropriate treatment can be instituted .
  • Discussion related to medical history recording to understand the medical health status of the patient by review of systems like Cardiovascular , Respiratory, Endocrine, Musculoskeletal, Vascular, Nervous systems and their management during dental treatments. Each system has many diseases and has different clinical signs and symptoms with specific oral manifestations which require thorough knowledge about them, Students learn by discussions and assignments, and weekly test.
  • General physical examination, which includes examination of gait ,built, nourishment, pallor, icterus, cyanosis, clubbing and vitals etc.Discussion  and demonstration of examination of salivary glands, TMJ, lymphnodes, muscles of mastication, nerve examination,ulcer,swelling.
  • Audio- visual aids to demonstrate technical aspects of working principles of x-ray production, the physics involved and pathological mechanisms in disease process.
  • Basics of Radiology like Properties of X Rays, composition of  X-Films, types of x- ray films, X-ray tube,  Production of X Rays, Processing the x-ray fil

FINAL YEAR BDS CURRICULUM

Clinical posting -1 month (more than 150 hours)

Theory classes– 50 hours

SKILL DEVELOPMENT

  • Students will learn in detail to record case history recording, investigations and treatment plan.
  • Students are taught management of medically compromised patients and also medical managements of various diseases and disorders of head and neck.
  • Diagnosis of benign and malignant lesions of jaws and also diseases of various systems of the body with emphasis on dental considerations is explained.
  • Open book learning sessions and problem based learning are conducted on the topics of importance. Students will learn by participating in debates and group discussions
  • Students will learn the technique and principles of projection of intraoral radiography, processing techniques and learn to interpret radiographic image i.e intra oral radiographs , understanding the image details, their faults, identifying pathology or disease.
  • Trained in the field of Forensic odontology to estimation of age through radiographs.
  • Regular periodic tests are conducted every week and internal assessments are conducted.

Conferences and paper presentations By Undergraduate students:

3rd BDS and 4th BDS students are encouraged to attend national undergraduate conferences both speciality conferences like Undergraduate Convention at the National level and also state dental conferences (telangana, IDA etc). Many students were awarded with best paper and best poster awards.

PG CURRICULUM

Our objective is to train the students so as to achieve a high degree of clinical proficiency in the subject to deliver specialized practice to the greatest standards in diagnosing and treating diseases of oral cavity and building the career opportunities in teaching, research and specialty practice.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT

  • Clinical examination of the patient with best standard practices and training in advocating precisely the investigations needed in diagnosing and effective and modern methods of management of the oral diseases.
  • Students are trained in dental radiography techniques both conventional and advanced imaging modalities like CBCT,CT and interpretation and diagnosis of pathology based on radiographic presentation .
  • The journal review meetings/seminar presentations shall be held conducted every day, it not only improves communication skills but also interactive sessions with the staff enhances the students knowledge on the subject.
  • Interdepartmental meetings with all the Heads and staff of the Departments are conducted once in a month and clinicopathological conferences are being conducted and attended by students .
  • Undergraduate teaching programmes either in the form of lectures or group discussions are being conducted as part of training program.
  • Integration between different specialities and also medical departments to work in collaboration is taught to carry on research work and skill development, to understand the importance of extent of involvement.
  • Continuous dental education programs , workshops are being conducted on regular basis involving the other institutions and the trainees shall be encouraged to attend such programs.
  • Students need to attend Conferences/workshops/Advanced Courses and also present at least 2papers at State /national specialty meetings during their training period.
  • They need to attend didactic guest lecturers in the specialty to strengthen their knowledge and acquire the updated knowledge on the subject.
  • Dissertation work and short research projects forms the basis of the research activity which improves their future perspective of research oriented careers, they perform it under the guidance and supervision of faculty.
  • The above all are performed to acquire knowledge , skills ,ethical practices and communication abilities.
  • Special training will be given in the field of Forensic Odontology to estimate the age with radiographs. Identification of deceased in mass disasters along with Age and gender determination.

Infrastructure and Facilities

This speciality is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of various oral mucosal diseases, TMJ diseases, Salivary gland disorders and Potentially Malignant Disorders of the oral cavity and medically compromised patients. This clinic is equipped with advanced X- ray machines such as CBCT (3D imaging), OPG and various other skull views to improve the diagnostic ability of a clinician for appropriate management.
