The department’s primary goal is to promote the oral health of infants, children, adolescents and people with special health care needs. The implicit in the philosophy of children’s dentistry is a commitment to consider the child’s feelings, to gain the child’s confidence and co-operation to perform the treatment in kind and empathetic manner. The driving force in the department is not only to provide the required treatment but also to promote child’s future dental health by inculcating the positive attitude and behaviour towards dental care.
This department offers both undergraduate (BDS) and postgraduate (MDS) program. It has 20 electronically operated chairs in the Undergraduate section and 19 in Postgraduation section.
The department is embraced with well experienced staff who are available from 9 am to 3pm to render treatment to the patients. The faculty also train students on advanced equipment and with latest techniques.
This department is unique with a well-equipped special care area to manage children with special health care needs and to treat children under conscious sedation. To manage highly anxious/ fearful children this department uses electronic anaesthesia and LASERS . All LASER treatments are carried out twice weekly i.e. Tuesday and Friday in collaboration with Department of Periodontics.
The play area in the department is warm and gives a school and homely atmosphere so that the child feel no strange in the operative area Regular presentations, case discussions and journal clubs are held in well equipped , air-conditioned seminar hall that can accommodate around thirty (30) persons.
This department has a separate wing to do outreach programmes and is very active in social activities by conducting various school health education programs, screening camps and treatment camps. It has adopted 4 orphanages 15 special child schools and renders free treatment around 1000 children per year. The camps are conducted on Mondays and Thursdays of alternates week.
Appreciation certificates and awards for BEST MOUTH, CLEAN TEETH and GOOD BEHAVIOUR awarded to children who visit the department, as motivation for good oral hygiene practices. Every year on 14th November CHILDREN’S DAY and PEDODONTIST’S DAY is celebrated and various awards were given away to children from various schools after conducting competitions.
The department future plans Our future ideas are to have a student/Faculty exchange programme, to initiate research projects on prevention of caries and also to start satellite centres in most rural areas.
